The Lewis-Palmer High School blood drive happens every year for the past three to four years during April. The blood drive is sponsored by Penrose Blood Bank. Penrose contacted LPHS in hopes of finding multiple donors, and it has proved successful over the years with about 25-30 student donors every year.

The blood drive is in the gym on April 25 from 9 am- 2pm. All donors must be ages 16 and older, a parental consent form must be signed. There is also a weight reqirement of at least 110 pounds. School nurse Kris Davis has been running the blood drive for two years and feels that it is a very good thing for LPHS to support. The blood stays in the local community and goes to people who need blood transfusions or were in an accident locally.

“It makes people feel like they’re doing a good thing for the community,”  Davis said. Donating blood from the school is very safe and clean. Blood is collected by Penrose Hospital employees or licensed professionals, so there is no possible harm in giving blood.

Davis advised eating very well before the donation is made. If a good meal isn’t had ahead of time, donors could feel very woozy and drained for at least 24 hours afterwards.

The blood drive is a great cause to be sponsored by LPHS so the blood remains local. When students give their blood, they could be saving a local’s life here in the Colorado Springs and Monument areas. Those interested in donating should aquire  a form in the front office.
