Sex, sex and more sex. That’s all the media shows us today. Today’s commercials, music, movies and even children’s television shows have begun to portray sexual behaviors, which are now affecting the hallways of grade schools nationwide. Teens today are bombarded with so much sexuality in advertising, so it’s no wonder that they begin to think it’s appropriate behavior for their age.

“You can’t even go buy toothpaste now without thinking of something to do with sex,” English teacher Deb Morgan said.

The media is shaping our society more than we all perceive. We may not see it right away although it is right in front of our faces because we are seeing these provocative messages everywhere we go. This includes viewing sexual ads and everyday products, reading magazines, even allowing younger siblings to watch a cartoon.

Things are becoming out of hand. Not only do we, as teens, see these degrading images and teachings, but our younger siblings and parents are as well. Teens want to look good and be the best so they follow all of the celebrity patterns, not realizing how negative this really is.

But us teens do have an instinct to protect our younger siblings. When we hear people swearing or doing things that are profane we do not want our siblings to experience or learn those things at such a young age.

“There is a new commercial on now that has to do with sex but the product is Pop tarts,” Morgan said. “I guess I can’t go out and get Poptarts now because I will think of sex after seeing the commercial.”

Celebrities wearing the outfits they wear are making and shaping our society. Because of the looks in magazines, younger children are beginning to emulate their role models and dressing more inappropriately. Young 8-10 year old children wearing outfits that not even high school girls would wear because they are so provocative can been seen out shopping at the local mall.

Sex is not something that should be casual. It should be cherished and not thrown around because of its presence in the media. Times used to be about having fun, being with friends and not all this sexual business.

We the people could try to stop it, but with all of the exposure in advertising, it will be hard to do.
