Senior Haley Midzor did a sociology project on a topic very close to her heart, eating disorders and body image issues in teenage girls today. She chose the topic at the beginning of the semester and has been working on it since learning many new things on an already fairly well known topic.

Inhuman in its flawlessness was one of the main points made by Midzor in her presentation stating that the standards put on girls to be thin, beautiful and perfect is inhuman because everyone has a different body that should be appreciated in its own beautiful way.

Midzor got interested in the topic from seeing how big the problem is affecting other people and her own friends. She is very passionate about this topic and just wants to get the word out to everyone that being beautiful doesn’t come from a label or a cookie cutter sized body.

During her presentation Midzor showed a video called Killing Her Softly which analyzed how media affects the young girl’s mind into believing that aging is wrong, being fat is not beautiful and that a woman’s job is to serve men.

“I already had an idea of how bad this problem was but researching it definitely confirmed it,” Midzor said.

At the beginning of her presentation Midzor had everyone present sitting in a circle, and she passed around a baggy filled with shocking statistics about eating disorders among teens. The facts surprised everyone and really set the mood for the rest of the presentation. Midzor brought food and drinks for everyone to enjoy during the movie and afterwards distributed positive and motivational quotes to lighten everyone up.

People began sharing how they felt about this issue and when it was Midzor’s turn to speak she became very emotional.

“I never want anyone to feel the way I have or the way I know other girls in this school feel; everyone is beautiful in their own way and should never have to feel that they should change themselves in any way,” Midzor said with tears in her eyes.

This moving presentation has become a newfound passion of Midzor’s to spread the word to all girls that they are beautiful and perfect in their own way. She will go on to change many girls’ lives and boost their confidence. Midzor is a strong and dedicated girl who didn’t know that something as simple as a sociology project would affect so many girls’ hearts.
