School transfers make new opportunities

School transfers make new opportunities

Transitioning from the DCC cheer team to the LP team was challenging, yet exciting.

Being a new student at school, regardless of the situation can be difficult. My transferring of schools was no exception to this. I had gone to Discovery Canyon Campus since I was in sixth grade and transferred out before my junior year of high school.

At Discovery Canyon I was involved in school activities such as cheerleading, track, newspaper staff and Canyon Crew, which is similar to Rowdy Rangers. Being a very school spirited person, I attempted to get the school more enthusiastic about attending sporting events and showing pride in the school but fell short. Discovery Canyon was a school that had just opened 5 years before my transfer to Lewis-Palmer. Going into high school as a freshman I was very excited to be a part of an established school where people had pride in their school. When I got to high school at DCC my expectations fell short. As a cheerleader at DCC I attended all home games and cheered to a very small crowd, usually just the parents. After two years of trying to get more school spirit out of my fellow peers I gave up and begun the transfer process to Lewis-Palmer.

Old classmates and teachers that knew I was transferring to LP were somewhat unhappy. I had even had my house egged a few times because of the bitterness.

I knew that Lewis-Palmer was the school I wanted to go to without a doubt though. As a spirited school that has been established since the 1920’s, I knew that LP had exactly what I wanted in a high school. Going to a new school where I didn’t know many people was scary. I was very happy that I made the LPHS cheer team because they welcomed me in and I became friends with the girls even before summer started.

When the first day of school came I knew the cheerleaders so it was easy to make other friends and I always had someone helping me find my classes. I am so happy with the transfer that I made from DCC to LP. Everything is better at LP.

At DCC I was a cheerleader and ran track. When I transferred I knew that I was going to sit out half of each season because of the CHASSA rule. Sitting out for half of football season was difficult for me. I couldn’t even cheer with the team in the beginning of the year assembly. My first game was the Lewis-Palmer vs. Palmer Ridge football game. Coming from a school where very few people went to football games I was pumped. It was by far the biggest game I had ever cheered at. I love how much spirit LP has right now and really hope it continues in the future. Track was less painful to sit out for the portion of the season. I still practiced and trained with the team, but ran JV meets until the halfway point of the season and then ran varsity. Besides the CHASSA transfer rules, the transfer was fairly easy.

The classes at LP were different than what I was used to. As a junior at LP, I was in 3 mostly sophomore classes. This is because the way that the classes are set up here are different than DCCs classes. The classes at LP are also a little more difficult. At DCC I was in honors classes, but coming into a new school I knew that I would be different, so I chose not to take any honors or AP classes my first year. I found that this was a good decision because the schooling system is different. The classes at LP go more into depth than other classes that I had taken. It took a little time to get used to the change but soon I was back on top of things.

I am very glad that I made the switch to LP. It really makes high school so much better to be surrounded by a great teaching staff and great people.
