The viral video Gangnam Style by PSY was released on July 15, 2012, and currently has nearly 350 million views. Now it has become the most watched K-Pop video in Youtube history and is number one on the Gaon Chart.

What truly makes this foreign video so popular in America is the catchy chorus and choreography. The dance moves have been featured on The Today Show, Saturday Night Live, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“It’s so ridiculous and people enjoy it,” senior Dennis Zhang said.

Almost the entire video is sung in Korean, so many people across the country are wondering what this song is about.  What PSY is actually singing about is the Gangnam district in Seoul, Korea where people are trendy and have class, which can be compared to Beverly Hills, California.

Other than poking fun at the snobby lifestyles of those who live in the Gangnam district, PSY also adds humor by referring to himself as “Gangnam Style” even though the music, dance moves, and fashion in the video is far from such high class.

“That man’s a winner and it’s the best video ever,” Zhang said.

Korean pop music (K-Pop) is a musical genre consisting of dance, electronic, and hip hop that originates in South Korea. Now that K-pop has hit the U.S., this foreign genre of music has become increasingly popular.

“I think K-Pop will grow in the U.S. now that people know it exists,” Zhang said.

The number of hits this video is receiving is increasing by the minute. In fact, it has already surpassed Justin Bieber’s latest video As Long As You Love Me along with Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

“The video will probably reach half a billion views,” Zhang said.

This phenomenon will continue to spread around the world, and get everyone dancing along with PSY.
