Every semester, Mrs. Monroe’s Street Law class heads to El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on a field trip. They go experience the life of being a criminal. On November 6th and 8th all three of Mrs. Monroe’s Street Law classes are leaving to head to the jail.

The class goes down to the jail and takes a tour given by a local depute. They walk into the different secured areas and get to see the cells that the inmates are forced to live in.

Not all criminals are thrown into the same areas within the jail. Felons are placed together; inmates with misdemeanors are placed in other rooms. Inmates that are under maximum security, meaning they are allowed one hour out of their cell a day, are placed in a different area as well.

“I think the jail will be large, full of inmates and lots of security officers waiting to taze people. It should be fun,” senior Sean Miller said.

The students that are attending the field trip will get to experience the everyday life of a typical inmate. They will receive a complete tour of the grounds and get to see how much security is put into keeping inmates in jail.
