The winter of 2012-2013 is one of the coldest Colorado has seen in quite some time. There hasn’t been much snow, but the temperature has dropped well under ten degrees in the morning. The frost from the early mornings and evenings has caused problems for water lines, gas pipes, and electricity lines.

This could be a problem for students walking to and from school. Even students who wait for the bus in the morning could freeze. We should have at least a two hour delay when the temperature is less than ten degrees.

Schools should have a two hour delay because it’s dangerous for children to be out and about in this type of weather. Most cars have a hard time starting in that kind of temperature, and have a hard time keeping from sliding on slick roads that haven’t had the time to melt.

Pipe lines in the ground can also cause many problems. They can freeze in the cold air, and cause traffic jams, slick roads and accidents. This can be a major problem for student drivers and parents.

Pipes in the school building can freeze and burst too, causing major damage to the building and major money problems for the school.

Personally, I have to walk to school and it is very hard to do so when the temperature is below ten degrees. The wind chill makes temperatures drop even further.

I am one of the many students who have to deal with this type of weather no matter what. It would be nice to walk when it’s warmer in the later hours of the morning.

No student, parent, or teacher should have to freeze in the morning. All schools that have mornings where the temperature is below ten degrees should have at least a two hour delay.
