Competing to qualify for the Junior Olympics in Alpine Skiing, freshman, Jourdan Valentine ended her season with an unfortunate event. She was attempting to qualify for the Junior Olympics when she had a devastating crash and broke two bones in her leg.

Valentine was racing Super G, a high speed event, and crashed half way through her run. She was speeding down the hill at sixty-two miles per hour just before she crashed.

Valentine broke her tibia and fibula completely in half. This type of break is known as a boot-top break because the force and pressure on the front of the ski boot causes the bones to break. She is in a full length cast up to her hip for another two weeks before she can get a shorter one.

“I came around a turn and hit a hole with my left leg and lost my ski. I fell face forward and flipped several time. I slid about sixty-five meters before I stopped. When I stopped sliding and looked down at my leg my shin was bent like a triangle. I knew it was broken right away,” said Valentine.

Valentine had qualified for the High School State Championships, which is being held at Winter Park this year, earlier in the season. Few freshmen have the ability to qualify for State because the competition is fierce.

“I’m sad and mad all at the same time, it’s not fair. I asked my coach if I could race it on one leg. I was very crushed that I couldn’t finish the season with my team,” said Valentine.

Jourdan says she is ready to get back on the snow and hopes to be there by the end of the season.
