If one were to pass the Black Sheep on February 15, 2013, it would have been obvious a momentous event was about to occur. Crowds of teenagers were snaked around the building waiting to see Miscommunicado, Tayyib Ali, Cisco Adler, and Mod Sun perform for their Road Trippin’ Tour, a fun mix of 60’s inspired jams, crooning raps, beachy acoustic melodies, and positive vibes.

When I first arrived, I was overwhelmed with excitement for the night ahead of me. I was filled with adrenaline as I passed the line on my way to the meet and greet, which was offered by the headliner, Mod Sun.

“He was so kind, ” senior Britain Buxton, said of his experience meeting Mod Sun.  “He was so nice to even offer to meet fans and take pictures with everybody.”

The second I walked up to Mod, he grabbed my hand and began dancing, a true sign of his fun loving attitude. I was a little starstruck, but managed to have a semi normal conversation with the musician.

“I love playing shows in Colorado”, Mod said. “The energy from the crowd is always great. I’m going to start doing more shows in Boulder and Fort Collins”.

Pushing our way to the very front row, my friends and I passed the time before the show started by dancing to the first band Miscommunicado. Their psychedelic melodies would have fit in perfectly at Woodstock.

When rapper Tayyib Ali took the stage, people paid attention. He was a commanding presence with songs that perfectly chronicle teenage existence, and he even held my hand a few times.

Adler, formerly of Cisco & Shwayze, performed a beautiful set. His voice is angelic and the second he began to play, the entire venue began to dance. He even played “Corona and Lime”, a Cisco & Shwayze fan favorite.

Finally, after much anticipation, Mod Sun took the stage. He began with his new song “My Hippy” accompanied by an intoxicating light show. Ever grateful to his fans, he exclaimed, “I will never be happier than when I see the audience reciting lines I have written back to me. That is the best feeling in the world.”

He jumped around the stage, dancing and being rowdy, matching the mood of his music. Always the entertainer, he made the entire crowd feel special and important, and as his last move, he descended into the crowd, serenading everyone.

The 2013 Road Trippin’ Tour was one of epic proportions and an experience I definitely look upon positively.
