The Power of Library Card

The Power of Library Card

Josh Koshy, Ranger Review Reporter

For many the last time they had stepped into a library was when they did the summer reading program, as a kid, or most likely checking out a DVD.  Most of the time the libraries are filled with children, old people, and book nerds, it’s not always the most “poppin” place to be. Other than DVDs and free internet, many teens do not feel any urge to even step foot in the library.

For those who actually still have their library cards, there are so many ways to take advantage of the swell good that can be obtained without even having to confront cranky librarians. All over the country many libraries offer patrons access to books, movies, and music all on their computers or smartphones. Patrons can access them any time of day at their own convenience.

What if a person were able to get their favorite book on their kindle/smartphone without having to buy it? Thanks to the local library and a website/app called OverDrive, you can easily download books and audiobook on your favorite device. When you enter the website/app you’re asked to login with your library card, once you get in your set to download thousands of books at your own convince. Beware this system works just like a library. You’re given a certain time to have the book downloaded then it ill go away, unit you chose to download it again.

Buying music can be expensive, and downloading it off the internet can be risky. So what if you had a way to legally download free music? This is where Freegal comes in. Freegal is a music service that allows library patron to download popular music for free and it’s legal. All you have to do again is login in with your library card. Unfortunately you’re only allowed to download up to 3 songs a week, but if you add that up its 150 songs per year. This service is perfect for people who are always changing their minds on what music they like.

The library’s website also gives patrons access to various documentaries and access to other neat things. So for those who forgot their English book or are too broke to buy any music, the library makes it easy for them to access information.
