Options 38 ventures the outdoors

Lewis-Palmer’s alternative program Options 38 spends every other Wednesday in one experiential class. Of these are three courses which include Healthy Cooking, Film Making, and Outdoor.

Outdoor is a course favored by most Options students for this class allows them to get outside and hike; they enjoy the outdoors instead of sitting in class. Students load up on the bus at 8:00am and head to a park with beautiful trails. Some places Options 38 venture to include Red Rock Canyon, Garden of the Gods, Waldo Canyon, and Cheyenne Mountain. Here they spend hours hiking, following different trails for miles.

“Outdoor is a special opportunity given to us to go and enjoy nature up close and personal for an entire day. Just the ability to spend time outside is great,” senior Jordan Sturgeon said.

Some days Options students get the ability to spend time at City Rock, located in downtown Colorado Springs. City Rock is a massive rock climbing gym. Here they have the tallest climbing walls in the state and allow all sorts of climbing styles.

Some styles include top roping, bouldering, lead climbing and auto-belay. Options students are taught how to do all of these things and are fortunate to enjoy this activity as a class.

By taking Outdoor students can earn one gym credit each semester, which can be very beneficial. All Lewis-Palmer students are required to have 1.5 gym credits in order to graduate, and for some Options students who have failed to take gym or have not earned as many needed are required to graduate, they now have more options. Students can choose to take an actual gym class with the traditional schedule, or take Outdoor once every other week and enjoy the beautiful open air.
