This year seniors have an extra day added to the school year, due to all the snow days we have had this winter. The senior’s last full day is May 17th, while checkout day is the following Monday.

Even though it is a state law that an extra day must be added if the school exceeds its snow day limit, many seniors are still disgruntled over the added day. It is understandable that after four years of attending Lewis-Palmer, seniors are eager to move on and are reluctant to spend even one more day walking the halls.

“I don’t like that we have an extra day. I know they had to do it, but I don’t like it,” senior Brandon Jackson said.

Jackson thinks the extra day is no help to the students because the teachers did not plan to have an added day, so they do not have any lesson plans.

“The extra day is necessary, but inconvenient,” Jackson said.

Jackson does not plan on attending Lewis-Palmer on the extra day.

It is rare for an extra day to be added to the school year, and is always unfortunate for the senior class.

“I’ve been here 20 years and have only seen the seniors get an extra day once or twice,” social studies teacher Mrs. Swanson said.

Swanson thinks it is necessary for the seniors to have an extra day even if students are unhappy about it.  She plans to use the extra day to push back her psychology student’s final so they have more time to study.

“It’s sad when the seniors leave, so I’m happy they have an extra day. I’ll miss them when they’re gone.” Swanson said.

Swanson believes her classes would not have had enough time to finish the curriculum without the snow day, making it a necessity for seniors.

“I definitely need the extra day to show the seniors all they need to be successful in life.” Swanson said.

Some seniors plan to attend school on the 17th for nostalgic reasons, while others are at LP simply because they do not want to skip. On the other hand, many seniors will have their last day on May 16th, as they always planned.

Even though the extra day is a must, it is still a shame that after four years seniors still have an extra day.
