Ambyr Hayes, Ranger Review Reporter

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1925 and is considered to be his greatest work. Friday May 10, The Great Gatsby came off the paper and into theatres across the nation.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, a man well known for his extravagant parties and not so much the source of his wealth. When a man, Nick Carraway moves in a small cottage next door to Gatsby’s extravagant mansion, they both take a secret interest into each other.

When Nick gets a personal invite to one of Gatsby’s infamous parties, he attends and hears countless rumors as to who Jay Gatsby really is. When they finally meet, Gatsby tells him his life story and the reason he has taken an interest in Nick.

Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), Nick’s cousin and Gatsby’s lost lover, lives right across the bay and Gatsby has been longing to see her again. With Nick now living next door, Gatsby has a new excuse to see her once more.

When Daisy and Jay meet for the first time in five years it is like nothing has changed between them, except for Daisy’s overbearing and entitled husband. Tom, Daisy’s husband, is skeptical of her relationship with Jay and will do whatever it takes to separate them.

If the timeless story is not enough to draw an audience in, the soundtrack definitely will. Produced by Jay-Z, this soundtrack includes artists such as Lana Del Rey, The xx, Beyoncé, and Sia. The music in the film combines modern songs with classic twenties beats.

I was mesmerized by the remarkable costuming and twenties inspired set design. DiCaprio and Mulligan were wonderfully styled and portrayed their characters to a “T”. The Great Gatsby is a timeless story and the movie was equally, if not more, eternal.
