October has begun and that means Halloween preparations are already in motion. The Haunted Mines in Colorado Springs is a must go to event for most kids in Monument almost every year for Halloween.

Many of the students from Lewis-Palmer High School go to the Haunted Mines to be scared. The Haunted Mines is a terrifying experience; it is based off of the old mining towns that were sometimes deadly.

This year at the Haunted Mines I was not thrilled with the outcome of the whole set up. I believe that in past years it has been a lot scarier. The actors from this years Haunted Mines are not as prepared or as scary as they used to be.

The theme of the Haunted Mines being the old worn down mines, so it makes sense for there to be elevators that are not exactly “safe.” I understand and like the elevators but not when there are so many that I became bored with the experience.

The Haunted Mines seemed to have less people volunteering because there was not as much going on in the mines as past years.

In years past I have walked out of the Haunted Mines scared and happy that it was everything that I wanted. This year was the complete opposite. I was not thrilled or even happy with the Haunted Mines because I found that it did not hold as much of a fear- factor this year, I usually left scared but not this time.

Too much of what made the Haunted Mines scary has changed. Going back to the originals and back to what made the Haunted Mines unique would make the experience more enjoyable.

I hope that next year they can increase the scariness and that I will once again enjoy the weeks leading up to Halloween already scared of ghost and goblins jumping out at me from in the darkness.
