Released on April 25, 2011, Divergent by Veronica Roth took fans by a storm. Both Science Fiction and non-Science Fiction fans alike took an immense liking to this dystopian novel.

“It is good. I like the book. I think it’s interesting and I think that it’s a very unique book. I haven’t seen a lot like it. I like Divergent better. I read Hunger Games and I read Divergent. I don’t know, I like the Divergent series better,” said sophomore Megan Brandes.

Divergent takes place in a dystopian society. This society, which is located in Chicago, is split into five different factions, five different ways of life. Each faction is different, with its members possessing different qualities than the other factions.

The five factions are Dauntless, the brave; Abnegation, the selfless; Erudite, the intelligent; Amity, the peaceful; and Candor, the honest.

This story follows a young girl, Tris, who left her faction of Abnegation for the Dauntless faction. But Tris is Divergent, which means she does not fit into one specific category. In this society, being Divergent could cost someone their life, so Tris hides it.

Throughout the book, Tris deals with finding herself, hiding her Divergence, and surviving initiation; even though many of her fellow transfers are out to kill her.

This gripping book became even more popular when it was announced that the book was being made into a movie. “Divergent” is set to hit screens March 20, 2014.

This big-screen adaptation costars Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four, along-side Kate Winslet as Jeanine Matthews. With this power-house cast, fans are sure to be flocking to the theaters to see this movie rendition of an amazing book.
