The idea of Twitter came to employees of Odeo after another one of their ideas of podcasting became irrelevant because Apple released iTunes podcasting.  Although they knew they had to come up with something different right after their other idea became useless, it took them quite a while to begin to come up with the idea of Twitter.

Jack Dorsey told Noah Glass that he liked the idea of sharing thoughts and ideas with others through a status. Glass had one day said that he agreed with Dorsey’s idea, so they presented the idea to the rest of their team. Upon agreement, the task was then to select a name. What started out as “Twittr” first eventually became “Twitter.”

it was mostly Glass who pushed for the project to be started, and at one point the entire Twitter service was running on Glass’s laptop. According to Business Insider, The Real History of Twitter, Glass insisted that he is not the sole founder of Twitter, but he does feel betrayed that his role in creating it has basically been removed from the history of Twitter.

They created Twitter as something to send texts of 140 characters which would be sent in a format called a “tweet.”  It was made for people to share their ideas and daily actions with their followers instantly being able to see it.

Even thought that is still the way some people use it, may use it for following famous people in a more personal way. The main use has become to be “Twitter famous” or to follow actual famous people.  This gives the average person a feeling of closeness with celebrities that have once before been seen as untouchable.

Twitter has taken a huge spin from where it started to what it now has become. Some people it is seen as a needless pastime, but for others it is their news.
