Today, the students of Lewis Palmer had an assembly for Drive Smart.  Sheyna Marshall spoke to the students about a story that changed her life one day in 2006.

On May 29th 2006 the Marshall family was on their way home from a trip in Maryland and while the Marshall family was sitting at a stop light they were hit from behind by a 19 year old named Willie C. Johnson who was racing his friends.

Christian Marshall a six year old, who never failed to bring a smile to his mother’s face, died upon impact while the rest of the Marshall family suffered from injuries.

Today, Marshall travels to share her story and talk to students about driving smart.

I thought Marshall’s speech was very impactful and emotional and touched all of the students at Lewis-Palmer including myself.  I have never thought about how even if I’m driving safe, I could be hit by someone who is not.

I vow to follow Christian’s Challenge and not engage in contests of speed, to not use my cellphone while driving, to speak up when someone who I’m driving with isn’t driving safely, and to be a good role model for others.  I would not like to be another statistic and I will do what I can to keep myself and others safe while on the road.

I think the whole study body of Lewis-Palmer should vow to take Christian’s Challenge and practice safe driving.
