Awkward is a comedy/drama MTV original series starring Ashley Rickards, who plays the quirky yet relatable Jenna Hamilton. Awkward has aired for three complete seasons and the fourth season premiered April 15th.

For those who do not know the established storyline from season one, “invisible” Jenna struggles with her identity because of an accident that was horribly misconstrued by her peers as a suicide attempt. Through this, she becomes more well-known throughout her school, even if it may be for the wrong reason. Not to mention, it gains her the attention of popular, good-looking Matty McKibben, played by Beau Mirchoff.

While Awkward is simply seen as a funny, lighthearted escape from reality on the surface, it is known by viewers to be equally as advisory. Each episode contains an instance during which Jenna has to overcome an obstacle on her own or with assistance from friends, family members, and other various authoritative characters.

Valerie Marks, the spunky yet compassionate school counselor, is one of the characters who plays a major role in Jenna’s life. Jenna’s open relationship with her counselor suggests to teens it is a good idea to share concerns and receive advice from older, more experienced adults. Jenna also has an open relationship with her parents, especially her mom, which inspires teen viewers to strive toward achieving a close relationship with their parents as well.

As television critics have applauded the show’s approach on realism, viewers have also appreciated seeing Jenna as she makes the common mistakes that many teens make, tries to overcome tough obstacles in her life, and deals with problems.

The realistic show approaches boy, friend, and family problems, as well as emphasizes the importance of school and the impact that one’s decisions can have regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. The problems Jenna faces and overcomes some way or another throughout the show provide positive messages to teen viewers.
