It was fairly obvious even on the first day of school that the new dress code was going to be difficult to accept, especially for the female students. It was a hot topic among the student body when it was first introduced and is still causing uproar.

Many find clothing as a way to express themselves and see the Lewis-Palmer Student Dress Code as a way not only to control their freedom, but also stifle their personality. The actual idea of having a dress code, may be more intimidating than the dress code itself.

“The school is says girls are provocative and they are making us change for the safety of the boys’ education without regards to our feelings. It’s too expensive to buy a whole new wardrobe, and the boys don’t have to,” junior, Logan Eden said.

Not only do the female students disagree with the dress code, but some males also believe it is unnecessary.

“It’s making people spend money that they don’t have in order to fit the dress code; they can’t afford new clothes, which can lead to the student being sent to the office. It feels like they are saying guys can’t control themselves because they can see a girl’s legs or butt,” Mike Tolooee, 12, said.

However, adult members of the staff, tend to have different opinions about this new dress code.

“The dress code is a good thing to have with today’s fashion. It is very necessary because the clothes people were wearing last school year were ridiculous. The only flaw I saw with the dress code policy was that it wasn’t specific enough,” Jan Pieper, Lewis Palmer’s campus security guard, said.

Some students believe the dress code may be sexist towards females, but some of the staff have a different opinion on the subject.

“It’s fair, but the male students try less to break dress code less often  than girls do because there is less opportunity. We would just like the students to dress appropriately and professionally. Everyone should be able to dress accordingly,” Pieper said.

Although it is apparent that this abundant change has made many waves, it is also very clear that it will take some getting used to. Whether it is the boys, the girls or the staff who is being affected by this decision the most, one thing is certain, the dress code has and will go on to affect many students.
