The girls varsity basketball team took on a regular season game against the Cheyenne Mountain Indians at Lewis-Palmer on February 9, 2016. The Rangers came into the game with a win and lose record of 5-14, working as hard as they could to attain another win.

Preslee Enget, 10, is one of the newest additions to the varsity team. Enget is starting varsity and is statistically one of the top scorers on the team.

“It feels pretty good. We do have upperclassmen on our team and to be an underclassman and a leading scorer is a great accomplishment,” Enget explained.

It was a close game the last time the Rangers varsity girls basketball faced Cheyenne Mountain on January 15, 2016. The Rangers ended up losing 48-14 at Cheyenne Mountain.

“They just out hustled us,” Enget said. “We gave up too many turnovers, shots weren’t falling and they deserved the win. This made us work even harder, we wanted to get our revenge.”

Though the Rangers lost to the Indians once before, the Rangers came out with even more fire as they were determined to win. The girls had a quick start in the first quarter, outscoring the Indians 23-7.

Arianna Blowe, 10, is a highly used weapon on both offense and defense. Like Enget, Blowe is a varsity starter and another one of the team’s top scorers.

“The game plan was simple, come and play our hearts out,” Blowe said. “They are definitely beatable, we had long practices and intense conditioning. We all just needed to stay calm and play as a team.”

With halftime approaching, the Indians turned over the ball to Lewis-Palmer. Kaity Hovasse, 10, received the ball at the the other end of the court and made it to half court with just 3 seconds left on the clock. Hovasse hurled the ball into the air and it swiftly plunged into the net.

“It was exciting, the best part I think was that it was more of a shot than just a chuck,” Hovasse said. “I could not believe I made the shot.”

The game went on into the second half, and at the end of the third quarter, the Rangers were leading the Indians 38-19. With the end of regulation, the Rangers took the win over the Indians, 51-27; thus, the Rangers updated their seasonal record to 6-14.
