Major League Baseball (MLB) has finally arrived after a long winter offseason. With the offseason just ending, more and more teams have enhanced their organization by either trading or signing new players.

One of the most publicised offseason trades and signings was done by the Boston Red Soxs. This is the last season for the Red Soxs first baseman/designated hitter David “Big Papi” Ortiz. The Red Soxs had one of the biggest signings with pitcher David Price, agreeing to a seven year deal worth a total of $217 million contract. The Red Soxs also made a trade for closing pitcher Craig Kimbrel, trading away four of the Red Soxs top prospects.

Kevin Tims, 11, is a sports enthusiast and a baseball player here at Lewis-Palmer High School. Tims is a huge baseball fan and favors most teams.

“I believe the Red Soxs have a great chance to go all the way,” said Tims. “I thought that with the signing of David Price their pitching rotation would have a lot more depth. Also, trading for their new closer Craig Kimbrel, who throws 98 mph, makes the team even more powerful.”

Another organization with many new additions is the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs believe they have what it takes to make it all the way to World Series, needing only a few more players for their roster. Jason Heyward, outfielder, was signed by the Cubs for a contract of eight years, $184 million and a signing bonus of $20 million. The Cubs were also able to sign World Series Champion second baseman Ben Zobrist for a contract of a four years and $56 million. With other signings like pitcher John Lackey, the Cubs are highly favored to go to the World Series according to ESPN.com.

Yoenis Cespedes, outfielder, resigned with the New York Mets for a contract of three years and $75 million. Cespedes reportedly turned down the contracts from the Chicago White Soxs, the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles.

“He wants to win, the Mets have that best chance,” explained Tims. “The Mets have probably the best pitching rotation in all of the MLB. Adding Cespedes just makes the Mets a high caliber team along with David Wright and Curtis Granderson.”

There were other offseason trades such as Aroldis Chapman, the 101 mph fastball thrower that was traded to the New York Yankees. Also, Todd Frazier was traded to the Chicago White Socks, and Dansby Swanson, the number one draft pick, was traded to the Atlanta Braves.

With the start of the regular season of baseball just around the corner, teams reported to their Spring Training camps located in either Arizona or Florida. Spring Training is used as a warmup season for the players, and it also allows coaches to narrow down their teams to a forty man roster. The MLB regular season starts on April 3, 2016, with a rematch of the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals.
