Absences and seniors last day

Throughout the school year, the district is allotted a certain amount of snow days a year. After all of the days have been used for the year, the board has to decide how they will add on extra time onto the school year to make up for lost time.

“It’s really annoying to know that the seniors might have to come back for a few extra days when we would basically just be sitting in our classes doing nothing. I think I’ll probably just use the rest of my absences so I don’t have to waste time sitting in a classroom,” Edie Statham , 12, said.

A plethora of seniors are confused as to what their actual end day will be. However, the district has decided that the seniors will have to attend school the following week to make up class material and finish finals.

“My family is going on vacation on the 14 of May and with having to come back for school the next week is hard. We’ve been planning this trip since last summer and it’s supposed to be kind of like my senior trip and with all of the snow days it’s making it hard, so I will probably just end up taking all my finals early and get out the 13th anyways,” Noah Sathre, 12, said.

With such a big change in dates, many seniors are opting to just be called out for the last week of school anyways. However, some teachers still need time to finish teaching their lesson plans which is what the added week is supposed to help with.

Up until last week, the seniors end date was not yet determined. It made some students stress out because of finals and summer plans.

“I really don’t think anyone knows what they are talking about when it comes to the seniors last day so I’m not too worried, but it would be nice to have an official last day that way we could make plans and know when our finals are actually going to be,” Sathre said.

The district announced the seniors end date, and because of all of the snow that March has brought, snow days are still a huge factor, making May 19 the day all students will be released for summer.

“I’ve talked to a lot of other seniors and everyone has a different opinion on how they feel about extending seniors last day to a week later. Like I said, it’s annoying but there’s really nothing we can do about it,” Statham said.

Graduation, senior pranks, graduation parties, senior skip day and the last day of high school are all apart of senior year, but with a few bumps along the way the last day of school has become a big topic of conversation.

“I’m so excited to finally be done with high school, but it would be so much better if I could actually look forward to a set day. Hopefully soon we will all know because it’s annoying to not know, but I completely understand that the district has to decide based on hours, I’m just ready to be done,” Sathre said.

District 38 has officially decided to extend the last day of school for the senior class to May 19, now that there is a set day many students can plan for summer and when their finals will be.
