On Thursday, February 24th, 2022 Ukraine faced a full-on invasion by Russia. The attack Ukraine was hit with was a multiple-direction fight for freedom.

“These soldiers lying in the snow, I bet all of them had a crucifix around their necks,”  Rev. John Nakonachny of the St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral said, “Brothers killing brothers, Christians killing Christians.”

Humankind has been fighting for peace and equality for hundreds of years. Having such an intense war has opened up others’ eyes to self-reflection and questions about one’s own morals.

Similarly, Russian troops and struggling to keep up morale, and a lot of soldiers don’t even want to fight.

“Evidence is mounting that many Russian soldiers are reluctant to fight,” Jason Lyall of the Washington Post stated.

These trying times have created a world full of fear. Many are wondering what this means for their country, their homes. For residents of Kharkiv, Ukraine, their future is uncertain and terrifying.

“Some people left town,” Natasha Suslenko, a Kharkiv resident, said. “We decided to stay because we have a small kid, one-year-old. So it’s pretty hard.”

While some people have stayed in Ukraine a lot of citizens have fled out of fear for their lives. Nearly 875,000 people have now fled Ukraine since Russia started their invasion, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) released.

Russia encourages the citizens of Kyiv to flee. Russian communication has implied that they will attack at random and that no citizen is safe. Due to Russia’s response to fleeting citizens, other countries are pulling out of trade with Russia creating a terrible effect on the Russian economy.

The Ukrainian economy is suffering as well, Ukraine is 74th ranked country in the human development index. With Ukraine under siege, their economic conflicts got even worse.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has been offered different types of help from other countries. The United States of America even offered an evacuation plan.

“I need ammunition, not a ride.” President Zelensky said.

Zelensky’s dedication to his country has been astonishing to millions across the globe. Instead of fleeing his country, he stayed to fight.

“The President wanted to get to the trenches. He’d already walked for half an hour in his helmet through the mud, surrounded by generals and guards, and he insisted they continue,” said a Ukrainian soldier.

President Volodymyr Zelensky’s courage and fearless leadership have aided in defending his country and brought hope into the citizen’s hearts. President Zelensky has been a demonstration of unity for the world and is a role model for world leaders.

“Our truth is that this is our land, our country, our children and we will protect all of this”, Zelensky said.
