The smell of freshly baked croissants filled the air, and mixture of coffee and traditional French foods filled the room with a blend of culture. Laughter filled the small space and the French language reached everyone’s ears.

“The French teacher I had in high school, inspired me to become a French teacher. I want to give students’ who aren’t taking French, the chance to experience the food, culture, and the music,” Brian Smith said.

Smith, a French teacher at Lewis-Palmer High School, has taken on the duty of making sure that French Club runs smoothly this year by recruiting more students, publicising it more and just making it a fun atmosphere overall. Smith first started the French Club during spring semester of last year. There are about fifteen steady members who attend this Club every monday, one of those members is Grayson McKeown, 12. McKeown is president of the French club and Smith’s right hand man.

“I would like to let people know that it’s a relaxed atmosphere for students to just chill out. It’s not academic at all, and kids can just come in and get to eat some great french food,” Smith said.

The club has been growing since it first started last year. It is a great opportunity for students’ to learn about, and eat, French food, such as croissants, baguettes, etc. Also incorporated into all of this is French music, French movies and just overall cultural aspects. About once a month, Smith chooses a movie that has people speaking French and the students’ in his club, or first time attendees, can choose to write a paper about that movie; what they’ve learned, how they felt about the movie, etc. Usually, the movies that are chosen have been made in France, making them a bit more eccentric and artistic than movies made in America.

Smith plans on having French Club next year, 2016-2017, and inspiring more students’ to join in the learning experience.

The Club is held in Mr. Smith’s room, 213, every Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.
