The director, Sean Penn, made a biography about Christopher McCandles’s in 2007 called Into The Wild. The movie was based off a true story. A young man, named Christopher McCandless wanted nothing more than to live out in the middle of Alaska. He left his family and donated all of his money to charity, then hitchhiked his way to Alaska. That is when his legendary story began.

In April, 1992, Christopher McCandles’s (Otherwise known as Alexander Supertramp) started his adventure to the Alaskan wilderness with little food and camping supplies, in hopes that he could make it through life by venturing his way on the Stampede Trail. He had longed for his dream to come true of living off of the land. He called it the “Alaskan Odyssey”. He stayed as far away as possible from any sign of civilization. On his long yet astounding journey, McCandless found where he wanted to live for a while. He found an abandoned bus where he would hunt for food and live out the rest of his life.

On June 9, 1992, Christopher managed to kill a moose but ended up spoiling the meat because he didn’t manage it properly. He had to abandon all of the food because within days it was covered in maggots. He spent his days searching for animals and plants that were safe to eat. He had a special hand book that said what plants were edible and which were not.

McCandles’s kept a journal which was later found after his death in August 1992. There were entries in the journal that covered over 113 days of his journey. His entries ranged from the best to the most depressing days of his odyssey. McCandless`s journal stated how he went days without food. Christopher knew that he was becoming too weak.

“Attention possible visitors, S.O.S! I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone. This is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you. -Christopher McCandless” McCandless said in a letter that he left.

As days passed, and no one found Christopher, he grew too weak and wasn’t thinking straight. He ate a poisonous plant that made him extremely sick. The plant was a toxic Alkaloid called swainsonine.

Christopher Died as a result of starvation. He was estimated to be 24 years old and only 66 pounds at the time of his death. His body was discovered an estimated two weeks after his death on September 6, 1992.
