Have you ever been scrolling through Instagram and came across a food recipe video, that almost seemed to good to be true? More than likely, it was a Buzzfeed Tasty video. Buzzfeed Tasty is a group of chefs and video producers that create recipe videos. Their videos have a wide variety, ranging from the perfect Thanksgiving day turkey to Japanese raindrop cakes.

I have always been fascinated by these videos because I think everything seems a little too perfect. The members of the tasty team have said that they test recipes numerous times in a month and when they believe that they have found the ideal recipe, they produce the Tasty video.

I decided I was going to take these recipes to the test and see if they would actually turnout as perfect as they seem. So I decided to make the macaroons first.

I started out making macaroons (a light cookie made with egg white, sugar, and usually ground almonds or coconut) that appeared to be a little to be good to be true. Macaroons are considered to be one of the hardest desserts to make, because one mistake can make the whole recipe wrong. The recipe itself seemed to be fairly simple, all the ingredients were easy to find and I spent around two hours and thirty minutes making this recipe.

From making this recipe I learned that every second counts when it comes to making Macaroons. The directions are very specific on how much time that each step takes and how much time needs to be dedicated to each step or else it most likely will not turn out the way it is planned. When making the macaroon circles with the batter, be sure to be consistent with the size that you make the circles, a good way to ensure this is to make an outline of the circles using a cap. This step may take a while but it will all be worth it in the end.

The macaroons taste was not the best but certainly was not the worst; however, out of everyone that I had taste test this recipe the average rating was a 6/10. If you don’t like sugary things, this recipe is not for you. I definitely want to attempt this recipe again and see if I can perfect it.

The second recipe I tried, was peanut butter cups. I have always loved  Reese’s peanut butter cups, so when I saw this recipe I knew that I had to try it and see if they turn out as good as they appear. The recipe itself was really easy, there were only three ingredients and the steps were very simple. The recipe did not have specific measurements making it difficult to know how much of each ingredient to put in. I assume that there were no ingredient measurements because, it is intended for an easy last minute, take what you have dessert, since it only took 35 minutes total.

While making this dessert, I learned that not having specific measurements of ingredients is kind of fun; you choose whatever you think works and you are almost acting like a scientist in the kitchen. When putting the chocolate and the peanut butter in the cupcake liners I learned that the chocolate needs to surround the peanut butter, in order to ensure it won’t melt or ooze out when it is done chilling. In addition I learned that making homemade candy is way easier than I thought.

I personally would rate the taste of this recipe a 9/10, although the average taste test other people gave it was a 8/10. The peanut butter cups was obviously intended for the person who loves peanut butter and chocolate candy and wants to make something quick and easy. I would definitely recommend this recipe and I would like to make it again.

Bread is known to be one of the hardest things to make and so when I saw that there was not only a croissant recipe, but a rainbow croissant recipe, I knew that I had to try it out. However, I was not very prepared for this recipe as I didn’t have yeast, regular flour and I only had 4 gel food colours, although I made due and it turned out subpar.

From baking the croissants I learned that bread is not only difficult to make but very time consuming, taking me over two days to do this recipe. When making bread I learned the type of flour you use really has an impact on the taste and I really should have just gone to the store and bought more flour instead of using two different types. After spending days working on this recipe, I would personally recommend that you should just buy bread instead of making it yourself.

I would rate the taste of this recipe a 3/10, it was very sweet and not as flakey as I would like it to have been. The average taste test other people gave it was a 2/10, saying that it was very doughy and not flakey at all. I don’t think I would ever try this recipe again, as it took forever to make and did not come out to my expectations at all.

After testing three recipes from Buzzfeed Tasty, I have come to the conclusion that these recipes are intended for the person who wants to have fun in the kitchen and try something new. These recipes were very different from your usual everyday recipes. Overall I would give Buzzfeed Tasty a 6/10, because their recipes are inventive and fun, but not very practical for everyday food. I really enjoyed testing these deserts and cannot wait to do more cooking.
