On April 3, in San Bruno California 38-year-old Nasim Najafi walked into Youtube’s HQ with a handgun. Once she was inside of the building she made her way to the building’s courtyard patio. Once in the courtyard, she began firing and shot three people that were out in the courtyard at the time before killing herself.

All three people that suffered gunshot wounds was a 36-year-old man in a fair condition, women aged 32 in serious condition, and 27-year-old women with critical wounds. As of April 4, two of the victims have been released from Zuckerberg hospital.

Nasim was born in Iran, 1979 and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1996. Her family moved to the US after extremist Islamists started to attack people of the religion her family practiced, the Baha’i Faith. She then lived with her family in San Diego ever since they had moved to the US. She went missing March 31 and was reported so by her family that same day. Three days later, the shooting happened in San Bruno where she would eventually take her own life.

Nasim’s reason for the shooting was her Youtube channel. Nasim’s Youtube channel had content that focused on animal rights and veganism. The channel picked up some steam in Iran where Nasim is from, facing more criticism and laughs rather than support as the videos were bizarre in nature. She was being paid for the content she posted but that came to a stop in Youtube’s “adpocalypse”. She blamed Youtube for targeting her animal rights, and pro-vegan content as her viewership dramatically dropped.

Nasim had expressed her anger to her family about Youtube demonetizing and age restricting the content that she was paid to put up on Youtube. She had told her family that Youtube was ‘ruining her life’. She had also said on a website that “There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site, your channel will grow if they want to!” Several days before the shooting Nasim’s family had notified law enforcement of the fact that she had gone missing.

The morning of the shooting she was found in her car 30 miles outside of San Bruno in Mountain View California. That raised concerns in Nasim’s family as that was quite close to Youtube’s HQ but did not tell police about Nasim’s anger towards Youtube itself. Later that day, at around one in the afternoon Nasim Najafi drove 30 miles from Mountain View to San Bruno. Once there she strolled into Youtube HQ and began shooting.

The firearm used in the shooting was a 9mm Smith & Wesson that Nasim obtained legally. Right before Nasim had disappeared her brother had noticed the firearm but didn’t think a whole lot of it. She had the firearm in her possession when she was discovered in Mountain View by police. However, the police were never informed or became aware of the weapon as Nasim was “calm and cooperative” according to the police. Later that morning she visited a shooting range for practice before heading to Youtube HQ.
