On Sunday February 9th, the 92nd academy awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The award show did not have a host this year, as several presenters and celebrities took on the role of hosting. The award show had the lowest ratings it had in awhile.

Many of the highest paid actors and actresses attended the show; such as, Tom Hanks, Leonardo Dicapprio, Brad Pitt, Quintin Tarintino, Martin Scorsese, Natalie Portman, Saiorse Ronan, and Margot Robbie.

The red carpet welcomed all the actors and actresses who attended the eventMost attendees wore black, gold or grey channeling old Hollywood.  According to Harper’s Bazaar the actors and actresses that are being said to have been best dressed were Margot Robbie, Spike Lee, Saoirse Ronan, and Laura Dern.

The awards for best supporting actor and actress went to Brad Pitt and Laura Dern. Renee Zellweger and Jaoquin Phoenix took home the awards for best actor and actress.

The bigger awards of the night were given to Parasite. Parasite won best picture, which made history as it was the first movie that is not in English to win. Parasite also took home best director, best foreign film, and best original screen-play.

Throughout the Oscars, musicians that were nominated for best original song, would sing on stage leading up to the award. Elton John, Randy Newman, and others performed. Elton John won for his song, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” in the movie Rocketman.

Grammy Winner Billie Eilish attended the awards as well, and sang “Yesterday” by the Beatles, alongside her brother Phineas. The Oscars is receiving some heat, as they did not do a tribute to Cameron Boyce, and Luke Perry, both of whom died unexpectedly in 2019.

Another musical performance was by Eminem. Eminem sang his 2002 hot song “Lose Yourself.”  USA Today interview Ryan Secrest, and he, like several others, was not expecting the performance. The performance has received several mixed reviews, but almost all people were confused.

Since there was no host, presenters were able to get creative with their presentations. Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig sang a song about costume design and showed off their “acting” skills to all the directors. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell did a comedy skit poking fun at cinematographers and editors.

Hollywood is known for making things political. Brad Pitt made a statement about how the senate made a poor decision and should have impeached Donald Trump. Jane Fonda closed the award show by presenting the award for Best Picture, holding her Fire Drill Fridays red coat that she has worn almost every Friday when rallying for the green new deal, which is a proposal supporting the democratic party. She encouraged people to go out and March.
