As the long-anticipated Winter Break nears, students at Lewis-Palmer High School prepare to take final exams. Students do everything in their power to ensure an exceptional grade on each one, unable to focus specifically on subjects that one struggles in without neglecting to study for others.
A way to solve this unfortunate problem that many students face regarding final exams would be to adopt a policy that consists of optional finals. The policy states that if a student has an A (of any percentage from 89.5 to 100), he or she does not have to take the final exam for that course. This would most likely not be available in specific core classes but it could be made possible in some elective classes and would therefore eliminate some of the pressure of studying for finals for stressed students.
Considering the game changing effect that a final exam can have on a student’s grade in a class, having the possibility of dropping a whole letter grade, this policy would immensely assist LP students in the final exam process.
Some may think that this policy would simply be an opportunity for students to “get by” without trying as hard as all of the other students who have to spend a large quantity of time studying and take the exam. However, if a student has an A in a course, that must mean he or she worked hard throughout the semester and deserve to keep that grade without having to further prove it.
This policy would not only be beneficial to students at Lewis-Palmer High School but it would take pressure off of some of the teachers as well; considering the lower amount of final exams they would then have to grade. LP students work hard and deserve for this policy to at least be considered.
