Måneskin is an Italian rock band that was formed in 2016. The band consists of 4 members: the vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria de Angelis, drummer Ethan Torchio and guitarist  Thomas Raggi. They have known each other since high school and started playing together in 2015. Of course they needed a name for their band, so they asked their half Danish band member Victoria de Angelis to brainstorm some Danish words and the one they agreed on in the end was “Måneskin” which means moonlight. 

One of their first actions as a band was entering a music contest for emerging bands called the “Pulse Contest”. This also got them started on writing their own songs and performing in the streets of Rome.

In 2017 they entered the talent show X-Factor. During the show they covered songs like “Beggin’” by the Four Seasons and “Somebody Told Me” by the Killers. And one of their original songs, “Chosen”, was later released as a single. In the end they got second place in the competition. 

In the following year they released the singles “Morirò da re” and “Torna a casa” and their first album “Il ballo della vita”. They climbed the charts in Italy and through promotion tactics like releasing a documentary film about the band and going on tour in Europe they got more famous.

In May 2021 they gained huge popularity by entering and winning the Eurovision song contest. This is a big and popular music contest, where artists from 41 countries represent their country and sing an original song. Måneskin performed their song “Zitti e buoni” with a lot of energy and passion, which made them stand out from the other participants. They climbed the charts in a lot of countries after their win and also gained a big fanbase on social media platforms like Tiktok and Instagram.

Their sound is very spirited, often booming with lively guitar and strong energy. Their songs are mainly in Italian or only have a few English sentences in it, but because of the passion in the songs you can still kind of understand what the song is about without speaking either of those languages. They also just released a new song called “MAMMAMIA” that is as rousing and infectious as all of their other songs. I also admire the band because of their different and special outfits and appearance, which they also use to break gender norms and encourage everyone to be themselves.
