The Lewis Palmer theater program has created a legacy of fantastic musical and play productions. For this year’s musical, drama students will be performing Beauty and the Beast. Kylee Crews 11, will be playing the lead, Belle.

In order to prepare, Crews says she has watched the movie several times in order to develop her character and she has also spent time reading through her script to memorize her lines.

It turns out that Crews and her character have a lot in common. She says that even though Belle is a lot braver than she is, they are similar in that they both love to read. “The love for adventure and a good book is something we really have in common,” Crews said.

The most important part of the musical process, according to Crews, is making connections with the theater team. “You might not be onstage with everyone at the same time but just being respectful of everyone else and making sure everyone feels welcome is really important,” she said. She believes that everyone is essential.

“Yes there are big and small parts but it’s how you play your big or small part that’s important,” she said. She thinks that everyone contributes to the atmosphere of a scene. “My favorite part of watching a show is the ensemble. Watching how they interact with each other or react to the leads is always so interesting to me,” she said.

The message of the musical impacts Crews on a personal level. She thinks that the musical tells an important message that many people today need to hear.

“I think that Belle tries to see the good in people whether or not they like her.  She tries to find the good in Beast even though he is cruel to her. I’m not saying that you have to be nice to everyone who has harmed you but I a saying that it couldn’t hurt. Nowadays people tend to focus on the bad and I think that the characters and the message of this musical are important now more than ever,” Crews said.

The musical will take place on the eighth, ninth, and tenth of November and Kylee is excited to see the hard work pay off.
