Donald Trump’s Travel ban, which temporarily blocks immigration from seven “countries of concern” which are: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. This ban affected multiple businesses in America that have employees that are citizens of those countries. One of these businesses is, of course, the NBA.

The NBA has about 29% of players that are citizens of one of those seven countries. Many have obtained citizenship of the U.S on a green card (permanent citizenship), but some have also come from employment based immigration. Since more than a quarter of the NBA’s players is from one of those countries there is clearly a problem. The issue is that if any foreign-born players from the Nba leave the country, they may not be able to re-enter within the 90 day period which would affect the team because they would be missing a player. The NBA has reached out to the U.S state department for clarification on how to interpret the changing immigration laws.

“We have reached out to the State Department and are in the process of gathering information to understand how this executive order would apply to players in our league who are from one of the impacted countries,” NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said. “The NBA is a global league and we are proud to attract the very best players from around the world.”

While the NBA is full of Muslim athletes such as Enes Kanter, Ersan Ilyasova, and Dion Waiters the ban could affect two players. Los Angeles Lakers forward Luol Deng and Milwaukee Bucks rookie Thon Maker who are both from Sudan, which is one of the countries on the current travel ban.

Donald Trump’s travel ban has many effects on the NBA even including some of the NBA’s top players. This can severely hurt the NBA and its teams because many of the teams will be missing players that they need.
