On September 22, 2015, the Lewis-Palmer High School symphonic band awoke the theater with its first concert of the year. With his hands raised, conductor Kevin Whitelaw, had held the attention of the band and, with the flick of his wrist, the concert began.

The symphonic band performed two pieces, Greenwillow Portrait, a festival piece and The Fellowship of the Ring, a piece from The Lord of the Rings.

After the symphonic band played, the stage was lined with drums for the next event in the program, the percussion ensemble. Its performance of Jaguar, by John Hearnes, was a fast-paced collaboration of various drum instruments played by the percussion section. Whitelaw even joined in on the performance, playing a minor cymbal part.

The final event of the program was a performance by the jazz band.  Unlike the symphonic band, who practice every other day in a band class, the jazz band rehearses every day before school.  They played three different jazz and swing pieces: Dog Days, El Burrito Picante and the Chamber of Doom and Stop Time, Go Time.

The next band concert will be on October 22 and will have a Star Wars theme. While the band is working on the pieces for this upcoming concert, they are also preparing for spring performances.

“We are always working towards spring concert preparation, because those performances are judged,” Whitelaw said.
With this first band concert completed the bands are practicing for the competition season in the spring.
