The last few months of school can bring up a variety of emotions for many students. For the girl’s tennis team at LPHS, the spring months bring excitement. However, this season has been off to a delayed start due to the snowy weather.
In order for tryouts to take place the courts must be clear and several rounds of tie-break matches must occur between the girls fighting for Varsity spots. Originally the initial date of tryouts was set on February 23rd, but the weather had other plans. Instead of playing tennis, over twenty girls set to work shoveling six courts of snow, ice, and water.
“I was really disappointed that tryouts couldn’t start on time this year. Shoveling the courts took so much longer than I thought they would and sort of took away from the excitement we all had to begin with. But I’m glad that we have finally finished tryouts,” sophomore Steph Nolt said.
On Saturday, March 7th, the tryouts were finally able to begin over a span of nearly five hours, in order to make up for lost time. Fortunately, thanks to the hard work of the coaches, managers, and now complete Varsity and JV teams, the courts are now completely cleared.
“We really needed to get the courts as clear as possible because we have a match coming up this week and the doubles players need to be able to practice with their partners,” Nolt said.
The first match of the season will be against Grand View High School, Thursday March 12th at 3:00pm, with Varsity at home and the JV team away. With a lot of fresh talent, the Lady Rangers tennis team is expected to have a great season.
