In 1894, a mysterious slab of dirt was found that had been removed from its spot in the ground in Eastern Washington. A journalist happened to find a large hole where the chunk of dirt used to be, but the dirt that was there was located 73 feet away. The hole was 10 feet long and 7 feet wide, the chunk of earth was a similar size and was found without any signs that a machine or any person had moved it. The chunk weighed tons and could not had of been moved in one piece by man. The reporters had stated that there were not any tracks anywhere near the chunk. The slab was mostly soil held together by roots of plants, but it stood 73 feet away from the hole, completely intact.
When studying the chunk and the hole geologists found that the slab fit perfectly in the hole. The most interesting part about the slab is that it was rotated 20 degrees. Soon the researchers found out that there was a class 3 earthquake a few days before the chuck and hole were found. Some said that the earthquake caused the weird movement, but the the small earthquake was 20 miles away. It had reached the area of the chunk but it was also discovered as being 4 feet under the ground
Meteors have also been brought into the puzzle, but researchers found no sign of possible impact anywhere near the area of the hole. Geologists also ruled out natural craters because the hole in the ground was newly exposed. There were no marks proving that any machine had moved it either. What they have found was that the small trail of dirt leading up to the chunk did not travel in a straight line it had curved away from the hole. After a while scientists had given up because all of their conclusions were dead ends.
It was not the first time that this incident had occurred, Norway has had 4 incidents with slightly smaller holes. It was also stated that it has not been the last. More oddly shaped holes and chunks of dirt have been found in other places around the globe without explanation. Today this still stands as an ongoing mystery.
