NanoWrimo, National Novel Writing Month, is a program where anyone can make an account for themselves and write a novel. Each novelist is required to write 50,000 words in the thirty days of November. Thousands of people make this trying commitment. Their reward for finishing this substantial task is having their book published; either paperback or hardcover, author’s choice.

Over one million dollars has been donated to NanoWrimo, by authors and people who support this national phenomenon. Around 325,145 people have taken participation of the 2015 NanoWrimo. A participant begins the writing process November 1st and is expected to have written 50,000 words, or more, by December 1st.

November, for many of those authors, is filled with excess amounts of caffeine, not enough sleep, procrastination and stress. The rough conditions are paid off with an enormous feeling of success . Many Best Sellers have resulted from taking the experience of NanoWrimo; such as, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan and The Beautiful Land by Alan Averill.

The very first National Novel Writing month, began in July 1999, in the San Francisco Bay area. The founder of this national phenomenon is Chris Baty. Baty thought that it would be a fun idea to write a novel in thirty days, as well as his friends; his friends all joined in and it turned into a national event mostly targeted to youth in the communities. Though only twenty-one people joined in on creating a novel the first year in 1999, hundreds and thousands of people have joined in since then.

People volunteer from all over to help raise money for NanoWrimo and to publicize it more. All of the proceeds made are put into the next year’s national writing month; Tee-shirts are made, coffee mugs, jackets, pins, etc.

While waiting for next year, many novelists were already writing out outlines for another successful novel that will, with high hopes, be reviewed and loved by many.
