On February 21 at 10:00, schools all around the nation participated in a 17 minute walk out of school. The reason for 17 minutes is because of the 17 deaths at the Florida high school shooting.

Even in freezing temperatures the students at Lewis Palmer High School a whole 121 of them participated to show their support to the cause. Even if the shooting didn’t directly affect some of students, they still wanted to participate. Either for a political standpoint or just to show some support.

, Abbey Blase a student at Lewis palmer who attended the walk out said the reason for this is ,

“ I wanted to spread gun violence awareness, but to also show support to the lives that we lose in the shooting.”said Abbey Blase 10

So why did the students participate. Some may have just wanted to get out of class which some my say is the wrong reason, but what is it besides the time out of school. We asked Carson Trumpoold, 10. Why he wanted to participate,

“It just felt like the right thing to do at that moment, it was just a way to show support to the lives that we lost.”

When asked how this affected him, his response was, “Even though I didn’t know anyone that went to that school i still brought it to my attention how much these type of things happen, and how extreme they can actually be.”

People felt sorry for the people that it did affect so to show the way they felt, the nation did a school walkout out, in order to raise awareness on what happened, and for some to raise awareness for gun control.

This isn’t the only walkout planned. Another group is calling for students to walk out on April 20, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine high school shooting. While no time has been planned yet, the walk-out’s petition page, (Change.org) has over 94,000 signatures. On March 24, student organizers, including those from Parkland, are planning March For Our Lives, a march in Washington, D.C., to call for school safety and gun control.
