Food Fun for the Holidays

Peppermint popcorn makes a great holiday treat for friends and family.

Sitting by the fire, decorating the Christmas tree, talking and playing games with family are all memorable parts of the holidays; but these festive activities would not be the same without food. Food is a major part of the holidays and brings us together.
Peppermint has been a classic holiday flavor for many families through the years. This peppermint popcorn has been one of my go to recipes during the holidays, is one of my well kept secrets, and is great for gifts.
You will need:
1.½ bar of almond bark
2.1 tsp of peppermint oil
3.4 crushed candy canes
4.2 bags of popcorn (I recommend unbuttered or lightly buttered but any will do)
5.Wax paper
Instructions:
Step 1: Pop the popcorn and set aside in a large bowl
Step 2: Lay out wax paper over fairly large surface
Step 3: In a separate bowl, add the almond bark
Step 4: Microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Continue this process until the bark is melted (I recommend stirring the bark plenty so it is melted all the way through)
Step 5: Add the peppermint oil and crushed candy canes in the melted almond bark and stir
Step 6: Now pour the bark mixture over the popcorn and mix until all the popcorn is covered. Take care to do this quickly or the bark will cool (I usually do this with my hands and a spoon because it is easier to work quickly)
Step 7: Lay the coated popcorn out on the wax paper and spread it so it is in a thin layer
Step 8: Let it cool and enjoy
This recipe can be done in many variations. Different flavored oils and candies can be found at craft stores or grocery stores. My favorite combinations have been when I switch the peppermint oil for cream de menthe oil and changing the crushed peppermints to Andies mints for cream de menthe popcorn. I have also tried orange oil with crushed orange chocolate. You can also try replacing popcorn for a bag of pretzels. Have fun and experiment with whatever sounds good.
