The most recent Disney adaptation of the beloved fairy tale, Cinderella, presents a fresh perspective on a classic story. With a newfound moral advising courage and kindness as ideal characteristics, the movie offers more advice to its audience than believing in dreams alone.

Lily James from Downton Abbey and Wrath of the Titans stars as Cinderella alongside Cate Blanchett  from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as the stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd as the fairy godmother, and Richard Madden Game of Thrones and Castlevania as the prince. According to comingsoon.net, both Lily James and Richard Madden are “relative newcomers.” It’s fitting, then, that the other two notable roles in the movie are played by veteran actors.

One of the most outstanding things about Cinderella (2015) is the visuals. Custom made costumes are left and right, each with a clear amount of time and effort put into them. Cinderella’s dress, designed by three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, took 500 hours to make. The lovely scenery both in and outdoors lends itself to the medieval European setting. Overall, the movie makes an effort to appear polished and aesthetically pleasing. Even the toughest audience member will find themselves wanting to be prettied up royalty in such a captivating world.

The only obvious problematic issues in Cinderella (2015) are the death scenes and the titular character’s mistreatment at the hands of her stepmother and stepsisters. The demises in the movie deal a heavy handed blow in comparison the 1950 animated version, which exposited the deaths via narration. Cinderella’s abuse also gets a bit painful to watch at some points, but the audience can look forward to the more whimsical scenes and that Disney happy ending.

It should be noted that this version of Cinderella is not a musical. However, the composition of the score that plays throughout the movie suits the elegance and enchantment of the story. It’s good enough to warrant shivers at some points, such as the famous ballgown transformation scene.

The movie received a 4 star rating on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Cinderella (2015) has been receiving positive reception from audiences and critics alike.
