Senior Sarah Budd auditions for the Musical

Olivia Kaiser, Ranger Review Reporter

Students of all ages and types from a variety grade levels are looking forward to auditioning for this year’s musical, The King and I, on September 16th, 17th and 18th. Many people are joining in, hoping to be a part of the show.

It doesn’t matter if they’re a freshman auditioning for their first musical or a senior auditioning for their last, the pressure is on and excitement is high; but so are the nerves.

“I don’t want to say there’s less pressure. I still feel so nervous auditioning, but there’s less pressure ‘cause, I don’t know, it’s just different. It’s my senior year and I feel so much more mellow this year,” senior Sarah Budd said.

Each audition is sectioned off into three parts: singing, acting, and dancing. The auditions start off on Monday, September 16th and Tuesday, September 17th, with singing.

Mr. Douthit takes the students and splits them up into groups of generally five, teaching them a line or two of a few songs from the musical of the semester. Students are then required to audition in front of a panel of judges, the choir teacher Mr. Douthit and the drama teacher, Mrs. Kennedy; where they will sing sixteen measures of a Broadway musical, as well as the song sections taught to them earlier.

Once the singing is over the acting comes in. Mrs. Kennedy calls students up in small groups and gives them each a script, in order for them to do what is called a cold reading. She tells them what page, where to start and who is doing which part, and the acting begins. It is best to start off strong; Mrs. Kennedy can spot potential and make up her mind in the first ten seconds.

Wednesday is the dance audition. Everyone who is hoping to get a part in the show comes and auditions in front of Margaret Foy, a co-captain for the Bronco’s cheerleaders. Foy tells those auditioning what moves she wants them to perform and the magic happens.

The advisers are great about getting the results up promptly. They are often up within the next day or two.
